Nervous System Basics

Signs of Dysregulation

A dysregulated nervous system can look like:

Short term

  • Tension in body or change in breathing pattern

  • Increased heart rate

  • Interrupted sleep

  • Heat or sense of irritation

  • Getting sick more easily

Long term

  • Signs of hormone imbalance: metabolic changes, poor digestion, heat in body, poor sleep, fog in mind, irritability, anxiety, reactivity

  • Compromised digestion

  • Compromised immunity

  • Mental loops- worry and anxiety

  • Body twitches or unconscious movement patterns

  • Strain or incoherence in self and in relationships

  • ADHD and ADD

Causes of Dysregulation

UNDERSTANDING TRAUMA:

I have heard trauma described as "too much, too fast- when something "comes at you" faster than you can process it.”

This means it doesn't have to be an epic event, such as a shocking accident or a history of abuse to create trauma in the bodymind. It can be simpler than that. It has only to be perceived as threat to an individual to register in the bodymind as trauma.  So what one person experiences as threat and registers as trauma may not be perceived as threat to another. This is key factor in understanding it.

Root causes of dysregulation include

  • TRAUMA (personal or ancestral), mental, emotional and physical.

  • STRESS over time

  • HORMONAL shifts and transitions

  • THE HPA axis and feedback loops (when the nervous system is stuck in fight or flight)

  • DIET

  • ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS

  • TOXICITY stored in body

  • LIFE TRANSITIONS (including birth, adolescence, menopause, divorce)

  • RELATIONSHIP patterns/disturbances

  • KARMIC PATTERNS

Why is Nervous System Regulation so important?

It helps unlock patterns that can otherwise be so hard to reach including:

  • Anxiety and ADHD, learning differences

  • Hormonal imbalances and transitions

  • Heart conditions

  • Immunity

  • Resilience/Recovery

  • Sleep

  • Metabolism and chronic gut challenges

  • Conditions that don't fall easily into medical models or diagnosis
